Health literacy is the ability to obtain, process, and understand the basic information you need to make informed decisions about your health. Fortunately, as health sciences students, you will leave your programs with a high degree of health literacy, and you will be introduced to a variety of consumer health and professional health resources. Unfortunately, as college students in academically rigorous programs for high stress careers who are often juggling numerous responsibilities outside of school, you may place your health behind the health of others and behind your academics. This lack of self care can easily lead to an overwhelming amount of stress. The focus of this guide is to improve your health literacy related to stress management so you can take care of yourself, because you can't take care of others until you take care of yourself. This guide also provides links to additional health literacy resources.
