Learner support

Writing assistance

  • Writing Assistance (in Starfish): Schedule an appointment for assistance in Starfish.  You can select an available time that works into your schedule to meet with someone from our writing assistance team.
  • Drop-in tutoring: Check out this Academic Support calendar for drop-in tutoring sessions, which includes writing assistance.
  • Tutor.com (in Canvas): This is an online tutoring service that provides on-demand tutoring and the option to submit your writing for feedback. In Canvas, look for Tutor.com in your course menu.
  • SJU Writing Center: From the April 2, 2024 This Week email, "Students can also utilize writing support through the SJU Writing Center, which offers in-person, synchronous online and asynchronous eTutoring appointments six days a week across four schedules – two on Hawk Hill, one at UCity, and one for eTutoring. Lancaster writers can select remote tutoring options on any of those schedules. Tutors from a variety of majors can assist with any type of writing at any stage of the process, including help with grammar and source citations. They are also trained to work with multilingual and neurodivergent writers and those with learning differences. Here is a link to the Writing Center website, where you can learn more about the Writing Center’s services for both students and faculty as well as make an appointment."

Recording room

Video cameraWant to create a video of yourself, check out the recording room in the back of the Learning Commons.  Bring a flashdrive, insert it into the computer, push the button to start, and push the button to stop.  If you want someone to walk you through the process, schedule an appointment with Academic Technology through Starfish (see instructions below).

Scheduling an appointment in Starfish

Starfish provides students with the opportunity to schedule appointments with different campus services and peer tutors.  This includes Learner support and Library appointments.

  • Finding Starfish: From MyPortal or Canvas, click on Starfish and login with your PA College credentials.
  • Scheduling an appointment: Some campus resources might provide the opportunity to self-schedule appointments online.
    • Click on the menu option on the top left-hand side (the three lines).
    • From the drop-down menu, select My Success Network (Number 1 and blue circle below) to see the individuals and services in your success network.
    • If you see a schedule appointment option (Example marked with number 2 and green circle below), you can click that to self-schedule an appointment.
  • Peer tutoring: If you are interested in finding a peer tutor, click on Courses (Letter A and purple circle below).  If there is a peer tutor available for your course, you will see that information in the same box as the course.  Please note that faculty drop-in tutoring can be found at MyPortal -> Academic Success -> Learning Commons -> Academic Support Calendar

 

If you go to the menu on Starfish, you can choose either My Success Network or courses to see scheduling options.

Please note that appointments are encouraged to make sure a librarian is available to meet with you.

 

Fall and Spring semester Greenfield hours (Learning Commons at SJU in Lancaster):
Monday–Friday: 5:30 a.m.–11:00 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday: 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
 

Space only staffed Monday–Friday: 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. with other hours available by appointment
